This best-selling book is packed with first hand advice for anyone seeking to escape from the rat race and take to a life at sea.
Sell Up and Sail is considered the bible for long-term cruisers and tells you everything you need to know - from the practicalities and pitfalls of early retirement, choosing a boat to live in, looking after her on the move, and organising your finances, to preventing ill health afloat, choosing suitable cruising grounds, provisioning in far flung places and deep sea voyaging.
Whether your dream is of coral islands or inland waterways, it's all here, told at first hand from the authors' wide experience.
The following review appeared in Sailing February 2002 about the previus editions of Sell Up & Sail:
In 1976, the Coopers sold their house, waved goodbye to the family, and took to the sea in a boat they built themselves. Ten years and many miles later, they produced the first edition of -Sell Up & Sail+. It was a bestseller from the start, and one can see why in this latest edition.
It is packed with sound advice from taking the plunge and selling up, to every aspect of the cruising life - and it has been updated to allow for the changing face of sea or any other form of travel. Many of the traditional sailing areas are not what they were. Commercial tourism and hungry investors came along to turn some of those quiet anchorages into flashy expensive marinas. In many areas, the attitudes of the locals were changed forever. In others bureaucracy has taken a little of the joy out of sailing. But, as the authors say: -As long as we can find an anchorage that hasn+t been blocked by a fish farm or changed into a marina, as long as we can keep away from the fast lane, we think it is still worth going on, 26 years later.+ Whether or not you are serious about the cruising life, you will enjoy this book. You may enjoy it enough to become serious about the cruising life.
