Reviewed in SAILING October 2006:
The RYA’s practical course notes on navigation, safety and seamanship, uses the same clearly illustrated, easy to follow format so successfully used on the earlier companion book ‘Day Skipper’ (Introduction to navigation theory, safety and seamanship). It does cover some of the same ground, but takes the procedures a step further.
Designed to go with the RYA Day Skipper practical course offered at sailing centres world wide, these ‘notes’, drawn from the experiences of many sailing instructors, start with ‘preparing to go to sea’ and then deal with all the things one needs to know when venturing on to the ‘big pond’. There are, of course, far more detailed books on the many topics covered, but this is, indeed, a very useful publication.
