Reviewed in SAILING June 2008:
Sail boats, power boats, big boats, small boats, Suzanne Geisemann has enjoyed them all - and that, as much as anything, has been the motivating factor in writing a book designed to encourage and ultimately empower would-be women boaters.
Ms Geisemann is also, by-the-by, a former US Coastguard Captain and an Aide to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on 9/11; so generally, when she tgalks, listen; when she writes, read. Her message is clear - if she can do it, so can other women. Her premise is that if women set their minds to it, they can take on a bigger role aboard, and that will certainly led to 'greater enjoyment on the water'.
It is not so much a learn-to-sail book, but rather a learn how to cope with things aboard book; things as diverse as fear and worry, down to more physical matters such as anchoring, lights, shapes, rules of the road etc. Her entire thrust is to makek women more competent, confident and safer whether they share the duties aboard, or even set off solo. It is simply a matter of getting rid of self-limiting attitudes. As she says, she wants you to enjoy every moment on the water instead of just going along for the ride.
A motivational book for women who want to take on a larger role on board. Addresses common fears aand self-limiting attitudes, encouraging insight and teaching skills. For sailors and powerboaters alike. Helps with the transition from passenger to mate and even master.
