Reviewed in SAILING December 2009:
Prevention is better than cure, they say. Well, this handy little book deals with both attitudes when it comes to electrical problems aboard.
Increasingly, with all the necessary and unnecessary mod cons, boats rely on their electrical systems. And the owner who wants to either prevent a malfunction, or repair it, something more than a basic understanding of electrics is required.
The RYA Electrics Handbook, like all other RYA publications, is thorough as it tackles the task of ensuring that the boat owner is equipped as well as possible with a working knowledge of the subject. The book starts with basic theories, and works through chapters on batteries, the engine and basic circuits, solar heating, distribution circuits, AC power, corrosion protection and maintenance and trouble shooting.
The hints, tips, fine illustrations and explanations all amount to an excellent guide to marine electrics; a guide that should be of immense help when things go awry as they tend to do most often when assistance is nowhere near.
