Reviewd in SAILING December 2009:
For some, it starts off with 'pottering around in boats' and stays that way. For others, usually the more competitive types, there is far, far more to sailing, and it is those sailors who will turn to racing in an effort to learn and hone the skills so necessary to deal with the challenges they will undoubtedly meet at every level of the sport.
This book is aimed at the ones who cannot wait to get out there and pit their abilities against others, be they young ones in their Oppies or older sailors in faster dinghies. Beginners will find the book invaluable, and since no one knows it all, there is something in it for every racing sailor.
'Start to Race' deals with the subject in a thorough, yet logical and easy-to-grasp way. The text is clear and helpful, and outstanding pictures, and hints and tips from some of the world's top racing sailors complete what is a 'master class'.
It starts with a section illustrating many of the dinghies racing today, and suggests what boat might suit you best. The very necessary chapters follow on classes, courses, rules and preparation, before the author gets down to the part most young sailors want to know about the 'how to' from race start to finish. Deal with sailing upwind, down wind, in strong wind and no wind. Learn about hiking, life on the wire, and how to handle matters when it all goes pear-shaped. The book seems to embrace every facet of racing.
Absorb the lessons, spend time on the water, and you'll not only be that competitive sailor you always wanted to be, but you'll have a lot of fun, too.
