Reviewed in SAILING February 2010 :
Whether you are new to sailing or have been around a bit, you'll find Pickthall's contribution to the subject of sailing tuition both enlightening and helpful.
Pickthall, noted author of things maritime, and a qualified sailing instructor to boot, has come up with an easy-to-follow guide to the world of sailing, from knots to navigation, from setting sail to safety at sea.
The advice for novice sailors is presented in a simple step-by-step format which starts with parts of the boat, and moves through choosing and buying a boat, rigging, knots, etc., before moving on to equipment, getting aboard, and rules of the road.
Handling, mooring and anchoring come next, as the 'lessons' move up a gear, until the author prepares to take you for your first sail. The clear text is given life by wonderful colour illustrations and graphics, to form a whole that is very well equipped to give learners a thorough grounding in the essential skills of sailing, and to allow the more experienced sailor to develop techniques and refresh his skills.
