Reviewed in SAILING February 2010:
Jake Kavanagh, once a lockkeeper, and now a freelance marine journalist and cartoonist, brings many of his experiences and all of his skills together in this little gem of a publication.
In his years working for the Thames Water Authority, he witnessed all sorts of horrors unfold, as novices and experienced boaters alike, on all manner of vessels, tried to negotiate the locks.
He says in his introduction: "'Locks come in all shapes and sizes . . . . but they all have one thing in common - if they can catch you out, they will."
And it is these mishaps, these embarrassing moments, that he captures so brilliantly with words and drawings. Open it at any page and you are guaranteed a chuckle; it is a fun book from beginning to end.
