by Lars Hassler
Reviewed in SAILING June 2010:
The author is a most unusual man in anyone's book. Lars Hassler has crammed a dozen lifetimes into his 60-odd years - and he is still going strong.
Apart from sailing, he has been a diver, skier, mountaineer, marathon runner, aerobics instructor and he still found time to obtain a Masters in Law.
He was 42 when he turned his back on the corporate world, had a boat built and headed for the sea - his new occupation: 'Circumnavigator'. Originally he only intended sailing for a few years, but by employing charter methods, or having paying crew, he kept going for a decade, accumulating a wealth of experience and wonderful stories as he and Jennifer, a 50-footer, sailed to some of the most exotic and out-of-the-way places on the planet.
The author outlines his early life, and offers sage advice on how to sail for an extended period. He deals with costs, equipment, route planning, choosing crew, bureaucracy and emergencies, medication, provisioning and other practicalities.
But mostly it is about the sheer joy of sailing, the many interesting people he meets along the way, and reaching destinations most of us can only dream about. So, do the next best thing; relax in your favourite armchair, enjoy the writing and the photographs, and 'circumnavigate' with Hassler. It is a great trip.
