by John Quirk
Reviewed in SAILING June 2010:
John Quirkıs articles and illustrations, so well known to readers of Classic Boat magazine, have at last been offered to a wider audience. One can only wonder why it has taken someone so long to publish a collection of his work in book form.
But, better late than never. Thank you Adlard Coles Nautical for as fine a chuckle as I have had in years; not fall about in the aisles guffaws, just quiet little giggles, and then sort of glancing over your shoulder to see if anyone is giving you strange looks.
Meet Quirkyı and his very interesting, sometimes eccentric mates as he leads you through a lifetime of boat building and sailing adventures and misadventures, disasters and delights, in some rather strange places.
The writing is wonderfully witty, the turns of phrase quite refreshing. It is a delightful read, and the enjoyment is heightened immeasurably by his detailed, full colour, Peyton-like illustrations.
