Doctor on Board
by Dr J Hauert
Reviewed in SAILING September 2010:
There are a few excellent books with medical titles published by Adlard Coles, among them Skippers' Medical Emergency Handbook and First Aid at Sea and this latest one, by Dr Hauert, ranks with the best of them.
Doctor on Board is a lightweight publication in everything but content.
Packed into its 90-odd pages is just about everything a skipper or crew might need to know should there be a medical emergency far from land or from help information and advice that could prove life-saving.
It goes way beyond simple First Aid, dealing with issues such as severe bleeding, loss of consciousness, shock, seizures, burns, hypothermia, near drowning, poisoning, fractures and breaks, superficial and more serious wounds and injuries, heart attack. The advice is endless, yet concise and clear, in line with the numerous diagrams and pictures.
The book rounds off with info on preventative health care, immunisation, well being on board, what to have in your medical kit, and even procedures for rescue by helicopter.
The book is, as it claims, 'the complete package'.
