Reviewd in SAILING : February 2010:
The author is one of Britain's best known writers and instructors on sailing and seamanship, and he uses his skills to the utmost in guiding you through the full RYA syllabus for Day Skipper.
He has a laid back, no fuss, hands on method of teaching, and a writing style that is eminently readable. The use of excellent colour pics and graphics also helps the learner along nicely. The whole fulfils perfectly the cover's sub-title - 'Skippering with confidence right from the start'.
If you have done some sailing, you may feel you can breeze through the first couple of chapters. But Cunliffe starts with the absolute basics - an introduction to a sailboat and all the things that make it function.
Then you will learn how to move the boat on and off a berth, do some chart work and navigation, and venture out of the harbour. So, soon, you will be comfortable, simply sailing. Now, you will move up a gear, and learn how to be a skipper, in theory and in practice. This embraces all the necessities for good seamanship, and should equip you not only to pass your Day Skipper course, but to venture out in a far more proficient and confident manner. In fact, it would be a good book to keep aboard with you.
To quote the author himself: "This book does not set out to transform you into a Master Mariner overnight. It has been constructed to deliver a soundly based confidence in essential skills through individually achievable goals."
